Charting a Technology Roadmap for Global Climate Resilience

The 2024 IEEE-ITU Symposium on Achieving Climate Resilience brought together global leaders to initiate a collaborative roadmap for climate action. The goal is to leverage digital transformation and emerging technologies to boost environmental efficiency. A follow-up workshop in May 2025 will refine the roadmap, with a draft release planned for December 2025.

Achieving climate resilience centers on both climate change mitigation and adaptation. Concrete actions are essential, and it is crucial to establish the groundwork for a swift, just, feasible, and equitable transition. This transition must be supported by robust policy, standards, skills, finance, and collaboration.

IEEE and ITU , with support from WIPO, convened UN Agencies, policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and standards development organizations to strengthen our collective actions towards a resilient climate. The symposium was structured around four key building blocks:

  • Research, Technology, and Standards
  • Policy, Regulation, and Implementation
  • Education and Skills Development
  • Finance, Trade, and Development

The 2024 Symposium aimed to achieve the following key objectives:

  • Explore Technology Solutions: Highlight innovative technologies and standards that support climate resilience and policy integration.
  • Promote Collaboration: Facilitate cross-sector dialogue among government, industry, academia, and international partners.
  • Support Policy Formulation: Develop actionable policies and strategies, encouraging clean-tech lending by financial institutions and development agencies.
  • Showcase Best Practices: Present effective technologies and practices to reduce carbon emissions and support future research and development (R&D).
  • Facilitate the development of a Technology Roadmap: Outline a collaborative roadmap to enhance global climate resilience, promoting environmental efficiency.
